Exploring Kunekune Bloodlines

Updated: Feb 28

Kunekune's are named after their parents bloodlines. Boys follow their dad's bloodline and girls follow their mothers. So if you have a Boris boar and and Jenny sow, her boy piglets would be named Boris # and her girl piglets will be named Jenny #.

Each bloodline has different characteristics and history. Kathy Peterson at Virginia Kunekune's has done some excellent research on the bloodlines and history. All kunekunes we have today come from 3 boars and 6 sow lines that were gathered up in 1978 by Michael Willis and John Simister.

Original Boars: Te Whangi, Te Kuiti, and Ru

Original Sows: Waitomo, Kereopa, Awakino, Marakopa, Kopu, Tammerdale

The bloodline that I have bolded are ones we have on the farm currently. Italicized are bloodlines we had previously but do not currently have.
